Many Christians unfortunately never get around to reflecting on their baptismal calling and the wonderful privileges and responsibilities that accompany it. The monastic vocation is one way of responding to the Baptismal gift in a very enriching and fulfilling way. Not only is it a blessing for the individual monk but it can also be a light shining in the Church to enrich so many other Christians and indeed so many who are not Christians. Here in Bolton Abbey we cherish the monastic vocation, and even more so when it is only a tiny seed waiting to grow and bear fruit. Here in Bolton Abbey we also desire to grow into the future, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We are very much pleased to hear from young men, and indeed not so young, who feel an attraction to follow Christ in our way of life. If you feel that attraction we encourage you to take time to pray about it and read scripture in a prayerful way. Do not be overly surprised if the Holy Spirit is calling you. If you need human assistance in helping discern your vocation do not hesitate to contact us. Sometimes to pray, with the help of human assistance, and come to realize that we do not have a monastic vocation is a great gift also, and indeed, for some a relief! It means we can move on and find out what God really desires for us. The normal procedure is that someone interested in our way of life is first invited to spend a few days in our retreat house with the other guests and retreatants. They will then have an informal chat with one of the members of the community. Another couple of visits may be advised. After this the enquirer should have a fairly good idea if they are being called to live the monastic life or not. Very often it turns out that the calling is to live a deeper, more prayerful life in our current life situation. Vocational Enquiries: Please contact
